On the surface, house hacking sounds simple enough. You purchase an owner-occupied multifamily property (duplex, triplex, or 4-plex), and then live in one unit while you rent out the others. Just like that, it seems, you could lower your expenses, increase your cash flow, and get paid to live rent-free.
